A named engineer who knows your setup, agreed response times in writing, and no ticket queue purgatory.£55 to £150/user/month

A managed service is the arrangement where you hand the running of your IT to someone whose job is to keep it working, for a predictable monthly fee per person. Instead of ringing round for help when something breaks and getting a bill you cannot predict, you have a team that already knows your setup, watches it, keeps it current, and fixes things, ideally before you have even noticed they were going wrong.
The difference from ordinary break-fix support is the word proactive. Break-fix waits for you to call; a managed service watches your systems continuously and deals with the disk that is filling, the update that failed, the backup that stopped, while they are still small and invisible to you. A great deal of IT trouble is entirely predictable if someone is looking, and the whole model is built around someone looking.
The parts that make it actually good are unglamorous. A named engineer who knows your business rather than a stranger reading your history cold each time. Response times written into an agreement so support is a commitment, not a favour. A predictable per-user fee so budgeting is simple and nobody hesitates to ask for help. And staff joining or leaving handled properly, devices and accounts and all, so those moments stop being a scramble.

The first thing it buys is your own time and attention back. When IT just works and someone else owns keeping it that way, you and your team stop losing hours to the printer, the login, the file that will not open, and stop being the accidental IT department for the whole office. That reclaimed attention goes back into the actual business, which is where it is worth far more.
The second is predictability, in both cost and reliability. A flat per-user fee turns IT from a series of nasty surprise invoices into a line you can budget, and it removes the perverse incentive to avoid getting help because you are worried about the bill. Meanwhile the proactive side means fewer things break at all, so the reliability your business runs on stops being a matter of luck.
And it gives you a relationship rather than a transaction. Because the same people look after you month after month, they build up a real understanding of your setup and your plans, so the advice gets better over time and the quarterly review becomes a genuine conversation about where the business is going. Good support is not just fixing today's problem, it is quietly steering you away from next year's.

Illustrative cases. Tap one to see what happened and what could have been done.
The case
At a growing design studio, the office manager had become the unofficial IT department, losing a chunk of every week to other people's login problems, printer jams and software questions, none of which was her actual job.
What could have been done
A managed service with a named engineer takes all of that off her desk, giving her back the time for the work she was hired to do while the studio gets faster, calmer support.
The case
A firm's main server quietly ran out of disk space over a weekend, the kind of thing that, unnoticed, greets everyone with a dead system on Monday morning and a day lost to recovery.
What could have been done
Proactive monitoring flags it on the Saturday so an engineer can clear and expand it remotely before anyone is back, and the business never knows there was a problem at all. The best incidents are the ones you never hear about.
