Receipts captured, transactions categorised and month end tidied, ready for your accountant rather than dumped on them.£600 to £1,200/month

Bookkeeping support is the day-to-day tidying of your finances that sits between you and your accountant: capturing receipts and bills, categorising what money went where, reconciling it against the bank, and keeping the whole thing current so that nothing has to be reconstructed from a shoebox at year end. It is not accountancy and it does not replace your accountant; it is the ongoing housekeeping that makes their job, and your life, far easier.
Most small businesses fall into one of two traps. Either the owner does the books themselves, late at night and resentfully, getting steadily further behind, or nobody does them and it all lands on the accountant in one painful heap at year end, who then charges accordingly to untangle it. Both cost more than they look: one in the owner's time and sanity, the other in fees and in a year of decisions made on figures nobody could actually see.
Kept properly, the books are current instead of historical. Receipts are captured as they arrive rather than hunted for months later, transactions are categorised while everyone still remembers what they were, and the accounts are reconciled regularly so they match reality. The tools do the heavy lifting, capturing and matching transactions automatically, and a person handles the judgement: what an odd payment was, how something should be treated, what needs a query before it hardens into a mistake.

The first benefit is a smaller, calmer year end, and often a smaller accountancy bill. When the books arrive tidy, categorised and reconciled, your accountant spends their time on advice and the return rather than on untangling a year of mess, and their fee reflects it. You also stop the annual scramble of digging out receipts and guessing what a payment from eight months ago was for.
The second is that you can actually see the business. Up-to-date books mean you know what you are owed, what you owe, and whether this month was better than last, in time to do something about it, rather than finding out the truth a year late. Decisions about hiring, spending and pricing get made on real figures instead of gut feel, which for most owners is the difference between steering and guessing.
The third is that it quietly keeps you out of trouble. Books kept current and reconciled are books where mistakes, missed VAT, an unpaid bill, a payment in the wrong place, get caught early, while they are small and fixable, rather than surfacing as a nasty surprise or a penalty. The taxman, the bank and any future buyer of the business all want to see clean, consistent records, and clean records are far cheaper to keep than to recreate.

The case
A busy sole trader handed their accountant a carrier bag of receipts and a year of unexplained bank transactions every January, and paid a small fortune to have it all reconstructed and guessed at.
What could have been done
Taking over the running housekeeping, capturing receipts as they come in and reconciling the bank each month, means year end is tidy and categorised, the accountant's bill drops, the return goes in early, and the owner knows through the year how the business is doing.
The case
A growing shop had no idea month to month whether it was making money, because the books were always months behind, so hiring and buying decisions were made on a hunch.
What could have been done
Getting the bookkeeping current and reconciled, with a simple monthly picture, lets the owner decide on real figures, catch a supplier who had been overcharging for months, and hold off on a hire the numbers showed the business could not yet carry.
