SERP stands for search engine results page. Your snippet is the little block Google shows for your page: the site name, the web address, the blue clickable title, and the grey line of description underneath. It is, in effect, your advert. You can be sitting in position three with a strong page, and still lose the click to position five because their snippet reads better than yours.
The two parts you control are the title tag and the meta description. The title tag is the blue headline. The meta description is the grey summary. Google does not always use your meta description word for word, but it uses it most of the time, and writing a good one is one of the cheapest wins in SEO. This tool shows you both exactly as they will appear, so you are editing what the searcher sees rather than guessing.
You will read a lot of advice that says keep your title under 60 characters. That is a rough guide, not the real rule. Google cuts titles off by width, in pixels, not by counting letters. A title full of wide letters like m and w runs out of room sooner than one full of narrow letters like i and l, even at the same character count. This tool estimates the pixel width for you and tells you whether the title fits or will end in an ellipsis.
For the description, the practical range is about 120 to 158 characters on desktop, a little less on mobile. Too short and you waste the space you were given to sell the click. Too long and the end, often where your call to action sits, gets chopped. Aim to say the useful thing early, so nothing important is lost if it is trimmed.
Put your main search term near the front of the title, because that is what the searcher scanned for and it is what Google bolds. Then add what makes you different or where you are, for a local business. Keep the brand name at the end if there is room. Write the description like ad copy, not like a summary: say what the reader gets, give them a reason to choose you, and where it fits naturally, include the words people actually search.
Every page needs its own title and description. Duplicated titles across a site are one of the most common problems our SEO score checker finds, and they hold pages back because Google cannot tell them apart. Preview each important page here, fix anything that reads weakly or gets cut off, and you will usually see the click-through rate improve within a few weeks with no change in ranking at all.
Most of the time, yes, but not always. If Google thinks a snippet pulled from the page matches the search better, it will use that instead. Writing a strong, relevant description makes it far more likely yours is the one shown.
Google truncates by pixel width, not character count, and wide letters take more room. This preview estimates pixels, so trust the pixel warning over a raw character count.
If there is room, yes, at the end. On a page where every pixel counts for the keyword, you can drop it. Google often adds your site name above the title anyway.
Whenever you publish or substantially change a page, and once in a while for your money pages. It is a five-minute check that regularly lifts click-through rate.
